Outside In Garden Rooms

Employer

As a new business it is helping us to continue to expand and also take pride in being able to support a young person in a key trade.

my story

Outside In Garden Rooms was formed in 2017 after we spotted a gap in the market (in central Scotland) for a company building bespoke, highly insulated garden rooms made from timber.  We are located in Anniesland and build our bespoke kits in our onsite workshop, before they are shipped to customers for us to install.

Prior to our launch we undertook initial research and development which has rewarded us with full order book since launch. With this steady growth we realised that we needed to expand our team of two full time joiners so we turned to the Glasgow Guarantee Scheme to help recruit a modern apprentice.

making a difference

As I was new to the construction industry, I wasn’t really sure what I would need in an apprentice or how the on the job training to achieve a qualification would actually work. However, I didn’t need to worry as the Glasgow Guarantee Business Team were fantastic, both in sharing their knowledge, and also taking me through the registration process to advertise the role. I was staggered to receive a shortlist of 53 enthusiastic candidates to choose from for interview.

The result - Daniel McKechnie is our newest team member! He is helping us daily to not only build our products, but also the quality and reputation we pride ourselves on – which is challenging for a new business just starting out.

Daniel is supplementing the practical skills he is acquiring with his joinery course, that he has recently started, with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) at Anniesland College – just up the road.

It has been really refreshing to recruit from the Glasgow Guarantee Scheme. The process from start to finish has been really easy and it’s great to know that Daniel also has the full support of a dedicated key worker should he need to chat about anything outside of the work environment. This support mechanism is very reassuring and valuable in his development and growth in his role - we all know how daunting your first job can be!

The Glasgow Guarantee is making a real difference for school leavers by helping them step into the real world of business but still offering them a direct route to further their education. As a new business it is helping us to continue to expand and also take pride in being able to support a young person in a key trade.

If you are a local business and meet the eligibility criteria, then I would strongly suggest that you approach the Glasgow Guarantee Business Team to find out more about signing up.
