Neighbourhoods, Regeneration and Sustainability (NRS) is the largest department of Glasgow City Council. NRS delivers essential services which are designed to help achieve the aim of creating a cleaner, safer, better Glasgow. For example, NRS: • looks after parks and open spaces, organises large scale events such as the Commonwealth Games, World Cycling Championships and TRNSMT. • carries out road maintenance for highways, cycle paths, local walks, etc supported by Civil, Structural and Lighting Engineers and operations staff. • collects recycling and waste in all its forms using an extensive fleet which are maintained by their mechanics. • monitors air pollution and tests food and other consumables. The apprenticeship is a part of the Climate Ready Apprenticeship Program helping Glasgow City Council reach Net Zero by 2030.
DUE TO FUNDING CRITERIA, THIS VACANCY IS AVAILABLE TO THE FOLLOWING: 16-19 YEAR OLDS 20-29 YEAR OLDS WITH A DISABILITY 20-29 YEAR OLDS WHO ARE CARE EXPERIENCED You will: Work in a modern, well-equipped laboratory under the supervision of qualified staff. Conduct chemical and microbiological testing of food, water and consumer products. You will also be trained to carry out the calibration of volume and temperature measuring equipment. Gain a wide range of experience and knowledge of classical and modern analytical testing techniques such as gravimetric, titrimetric, colorimetry, chromatography and mass spectrometry. Develop the skills required to work in the microbiology section. Work in teams and follow instructions. Attend college for training 1 day per week where you will study how to, • Perform scientific testing and learn how to assess the validity of the results obtained. • Report analytical results in a concise and coherent manner. • Understand the theory behind the testing. • Carry out COSHH Assessments and evaluate the risks associated with working in a laboratory. Qualifications offered: SVQ laboratory and Associated Technical Activities (Industrial Science) SCQF Level 7 HNC Applied Science with possible progression to degree. Each candidate’s performance is evaluated regularly to assess suitability for progression.
Have an interest in science Experience of using IT equipment Experience of using MS Office software packages (Word, Excel etc.) Aware of Quality Control within a laboratory. Enjoy working as part of a team Enjoy problem solving Previous experience would be an advantage, e.g. a Foundation Apprenticeship in a scientific subject.
Minimum of C in either Higher Chemistry/Biology/Human Biology in addition to Nat 5 A/B in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and English
