Do you have a love of food and an interest in cooking? We are recruiting for a Modern Apprentice to learn all aspects of professional cookery as part of our Catering and Facilities Management team. This vacancy represents an incredible opportunity for someone to improve their cookery skills in a professional kitchen environment.
The successful candidate would work day-to-day in the team while working towards achieving a Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) at Level 2.
The successful candidate will carry out a range of duties, specialising in areas such as;
• Maintain food safety in a kitchen environment
• Maintain and handle knives
• Prepare vegetables for basic dishes
• Prepare poultry, meat and game for basic dishes
• Prepare offal for basic dishes
• Cook and garnish basic soups
• Cook and chill food
• Cook basic vegetable protein dishes
• Cook and finish basic pasta dishes
You will also develop core skills including communication, problem solving, time management and teamwork.
As a Modern Apprentice, as well as working in your day-to-day role, you will be studying towards SVQ Level 5 certificate. During your apprenticeship you will work towards your qualification, whilst being able to apply your learning to the real life kitchen environment. In turn, you will receive first class training, excellent conditions and experience of working in one of Glasgow’s leading employers.
You will be expected to demonstrate that you can maintain health and safety in a variety of settings such as Schools, Care Homes and showcase hospitality venues in Glasgow. You will work effectively as part of a team, maintain and handle knives safely and correctly and maintain food safety. In addition, you will learn how to prepare many basic meat, fish, poultry and vegetable dishes as well as other areas of professional cookery.

Our Catering and Facilities Management team deal with all aspects of catering across a vast number of schools, venues and facilities operated by Glasgow City Council. Our catering teams strive to provide the best food possible whilst working to strict budgets and delivering the highest levels of hygiene and customer service.
Nat 4 English preferred
Nat 4 Maths preferred
A good general education and an enthusiasm for food and cookery. Nat 4 Maths and English are preferred but not essential.
